Update

All Should be Quiet on the RBA Front

Last week saw the release of the first quarterly inflation figures of 2024, and while the reduction in the inflation rate from December’s figures wasn’t as large as the RBA would hope, it should be close enough to mean that there’s no need for an increase in the official cash rate when they meet at the start of next week. As you can see from the graph below, inflation is basically falling at the exact same rate as it rose between the end of 2021 & end of 2022.

Additionally, the largest contributors to that inflation figure in the March quarter were Rent, Education Costs (Secondary & Tertiary), Medical Costs, and the Cost of Building New Homes.

None of these costs are something that an increase in the official cash rate will help reduce, so hopefully the RBA board will see sense when they meet on Monday & Tuesday next week and will leave the official cash rate unchanged.
